Welcome To Our Flag Day Photo Exhibition. I will attempt to briefly describe
each picture, and its meaning to me so you might enjoy not only the visual
beauty but the story behind my taking the photo. Flags, as you
have read in the Flag Day Story, represent to me the sinew of America and
hold within their weave, the collective strength of generations past,
present, and those to come--as long as we remain Vigilant and do not succumb
to Complacency--Terrorism's most powerful weapon. |
This is one of my favorites. In January I visited my wife's parents in Montana. This flag stood proudly in the ice and snow in Helena. In the summer, the tub is full of plants and flowers. |
For months I passed by this flag, admiring it. Nearly 240 days later I found its owner, Ms. Janet Jones, a combination of African-American, Irish, Native American. Janet's flag reminds us all the State of Vigilance begins with the original property owners, the Indians, and is survived by our most current Sentinels of Vigilance, the spirits of those who physical bodies perished on September 11, 2001. |
I was moved by this flag. It is a beautiful symbol of strength and peace. It hung in a store window in the East Village, bearing the Sign Of Peace embossed throughout the weave. Even a former Marine can appreciate such a sound and powerful message. |
I took this picture on New Year's Eve morning, 2001, at 63rd and West Central Park. It was the dawning of the last day of the millennium, and, I believe, the ushering in of the Era Of Vigilance. |
A tattered car flag--veteran of nine months of flapping in the wind, and still standing strong. I took this three days ago, June 11. It symbolizes that pieces of America may be ripped and shredded by events, but the whole of its weave sustains the worst of storms. Even in its rugged, worn shape, it stands proud, elegant, rich in hope and ripe with Vigilance. |
Last Evening, June 13, a store caught fire just a few doors from our apartment. The street was filled with fire trucks responding to the emergency just as they had on September 11. Each flew America's flag as a symbol of Vigilance, reminding us to never forget to remember that Terrorism can strike at the most unexpected moment--and to keep Complacency under Courage's foot. |
